Gary Watson MP was watching himself fucking.

It was one of his many recordings. He watched his toned hairless back thrusting, gleaming in hard bright hotel light, a pair of nodding ankles high around his ears. He watched, his eyes unblinking, his mouth hanging open, a hand down his black silken pants.

He was suddenly startled by a bleep from his other phone. He moved his hand. His mouth snapped shut. He shut down the video. He peered out over the valley from his glassy, clean, stone-and-steel kitchen at Scar Top. Shirtless, he spat on the slate floor and closed his phone.

Scar Top was the old Watson mansion on the outskirts of Ullathorne, set back along a long drive and in trees, standing on its own hill overlooking the town. In recent years, it had been refurbished, redeveloped, built upon. Now its interior was all white concrete, polished stone and glass. Clean surfaces. Wipe-down steel and long planes of blue glass. It had gates and grounds, but it retained the old cellars and hiding places.

He moved closer to the window. A notification bleeped again on the phone lying on the long glass tabletop. Shadows murmured in the glass like depths of water.

He hoped it was a message from Alyce.

But no. It was an encrypted text:
